Raul Rosas Jr. is set to make his eighth appearance in the Octagon this Saturday when he faces Raoni Barcelos in the main event of UFC Vegas 121. At just 21 years old, the bantamweight prospect is stepping into his first UFC headliner with the same ambitious timeline he carried into his promotional debut: becoming the youngest champion in UFC history.
The record is currently held by Jon Jones, who captured the UFC light heavyweight championship at 23 years old. With Rosas turning 22 in a couple of weeks, he has under two years to ascend the crowded bantamweight division. In an interview with Full Send MMA, Rosas acknowledged that staying on track requires taking risks, staying ready for short-notice fights, and delivering an emphatic statement against Barcelos rather than simply securing a win.
Even if "El Niño Problema" accomplishes his championship goals, he does not foresee an extended career in the cage. Rosas explained that he hopes to step away from mixed martial arts relatively early once all of his targets are met. His blueprint includes winning the belt, defending it a couple of times, and testing himself by moving up one or two weight classes.
"Yeah, if by 25 I accomplish everything that I want to accomplish in my career, I'm just going to step out," Rosas said. He added that while the exit could come at 26, 27, or 28, his ultimate plan is to leave the sport as soon as he runs out of goals.
