At UFC Vegas 121 last month, Raoni Barcelos was leading on the judges' scorecards entering the fifth round of his headlining matchup against Raul Rosas Jr. However, the 39-year-old Brazilian lost consciousness during a grappling exchange against the fence, leading to a technical knockout victory for Rosas Jr. Following the bout, Barcelos was immediately transported to a Level 1 trauma center.
Despite undergoing an extensive battery of tests in Las Vegas, Barcelos told MMA Fighting that medical professionals have yet to determine why he lost consciousness. "Unfortunately, we don't know what happened," Barcelos said. "I fell ill and I felt my whole body really starting to go numb. I only remember [arriving] in the ambulance, asking my father what happened, and him trying to explain it as best as he could." He noted that he underwent another test on Monday and is awaiting results, which remain confidential with his physician.
Barcelos (22-6) entered the contest on a five-fight winning streak. A UFC competitor since 2018, he holds an 11-5 promotional record featuring notable victories over Said Nurmagomedov, Cody Garbrandt, and Payton Talbott. Although he hopes to return to competition, Barcelos admitted that he has not ruled out the possibility of retirement.
