The UFC announced during Saturday's UFC 333 broadcast that Carlos Prates and Michael Morales will face off for the interim welterweight championship at UFC 336. The event is scheduled to take place on Jan. 30, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The interim title bout was established because undisputed 170-pound champion Islam Makhachev is unavailable to compete in January.

Prates (24-7) enters the contest riding a three-fight streak of knockouts or technical knockouts, having secured finishes in all seven of his UFC victories. The Brazilian knockout artist suffered his lone promotional defeat against Ian Garry. Ahead of the booking, Prates indicated Makhachev would not be next, posting to a fan on Instagram: “I heard that Islam don't even wanna fight bro.”

Morales (19-0) puts his unblemished record on the line after winning all seven of his UFC appearances. The winner of the Prates-Morales interim clash is expected to meet Makhachev in a title unification bout. Makhachev (29-1) previously captured the welterweight belt against Jack Della Maddalena last year and defended it in August against Garry.

Also scheduled for UFC 336, flyweight champion Joshua Van will put his 125-pound title on the line against Manel Kape. Van stands as one of the youngest champions in UFC history, while Kape is a former Rizin Fighting Federation bantamweight champion.
