UFC commentator Paul Felder witnessed a harrowing scene at UFC Vegas 121 during Saturday's five-round bantamweight main event between Raul Rosas Jr. and Raoni Barcelos. In the fifth round, Barcelos appeared to suffer a sudden medical episode while Rosas was working on a takedown.
Barcelos lost consciousness despite seemingly not absorbing a knockout blow, prompting Rosas to immediately step away. Medical personnel quickly entered the Octagon, but the Brazilian fighter remained unconscious for several minutes before being stretchered out and transported to a local hospital. Hours later, Barcelos' coach reported that the fighter was conscious, lucid, mobile, and expected to be fine.
Speaking on the Believe You Me podcast, Felder reflected on the frightening sequence from cageside. Felder admitted he initially feared the worst when ringside physicians rushed in and immediately checked Barcelos' pulse. "His neck was all clinched up, and he was unconscious," Felder said.
"And it looked like he was — I thought he had a heart attack, off the bat. Then they came in, and they checked his pulse, which was terrifying to see. I have never seen somebody that was KO’d, where they come in and the first thing they did, the doctor put his fingers right on Raoni’s pulse.
I was like, 'Oh, this is really bad.'"
Felder added that Barcelos was breathing and not receiving CPR, leading him to wonder if Barcelos had suffered a stroke. While relieved that Barcelos is recovering, Felder stressed that unless comprehensive medical testing shows the incident was a freak occurrence, the veteran should consider stepping away from mixed martial arts. Noting that Barcelos' body gave out to some degree, Felder voiced hope that Barcelos will not risk his health further and will choose to retire from competition.
