Patricio Pitbull Calls Out Lerone Murphy for UFC Featherweight Bout

Patricio Freire has targeted Lerone Murphy for a pivotal featherweight matchup, arguing that divisional circumstances make their fight the logical next step.

Following Alexander Volkanovski's title defense against Movsar Evloev at UFC 333, featherweight contender Lerone Murphy weighed in on the title picture on X. Murphy expressed his belief that every top contender still needs one more victory before securing a shot at the 145-pound championship, drawing an immediate response from former multi-division standout Patricio Freire.

Murphy (17-1-1), who suffered his first professional defeat against Evloev in March and previously defeated Aaron Pico, stated he was told he must defeat a top-five opponent before earning a title fight. He argued the same standard should apply to all contenders in the division.

Freire (38-9) responded by laying out his case for a bout against Murphy. Breaking down the top 15, "Pitbull" pointed out that Evloev just lost, Diego Lopes, Alessandro Costa, and Brian Ortega moved up to lightweight, Aljamain Sterling is matched against Kevin Vallejos, Yair Rodriguez and Arnold Allen are sidelined with injuries, and Morgan Charriere/Isaac Dalgarian competitors like Asu Almabayev or rather Asu Zalal, Garcia, and Onama are coming off defeats.

Freire has alternated wins and losses inside the Octagon, holding a 2-2 promotional record. The Brazilian veteran earned a finish over Doo Ho Choi in his most recent appearance in September and is now looking to position himself for a title eliminator against Murphy.
