Carlos Prates was expected to challenge Islam Makhachev for the undisputed welterweight championship at UFC 336 on Jan. 30, 2027, in Toronto, but the champion turned down the booking without offering an explanation, according to Prates’ manager, Lucas Lutkus.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Lutkus stated that the UFC had instructed Prates to prepare for Makhachev, an offer the Brazilian immediately accepted. The fight appeared to align with Makhachev's public comments, as the champion had stated at a press conference that he wanted to compete prior to Ramadan and indicated Prates deserved the opportunity. However, plans quickly unraveled when the promotion informed Prates' camp that Makhachev would not be competing on the date.

“The UFC called me last Tuesday and said, ‘Islam is out,’” Lutkus said. “I asked if it was an injury, and they said Islam hadn’t given them a reason. He had only said he wouldn’t be ready for January.” Lutkus added that he does not believe Makhachev was afraid of facing Prates, but noted something caused him to change his mind, leaving the UFC "a little upset" over the lack of explanation.

With Makhachev sidelined for the January event, Prates has instead been matched against Michael Morales for the interim welterweight championship.
