Makhachev Backs Prates vs. Morales Interim Welterweight Title Bout

Islam Makhachev believes an interim title fight between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales will determine the true next challenger for his welterweight belt.

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has voiced his support for the upcoming interim title fight between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales, stating the matchup will determine who truly deserves the next undisputed title shot. Makhachev was originally expected to defend his title against Prates at UFC 336 in January 2027, but the promotion has instead opted to match Prates against Morales for an interim belt.

Makhachev (29-1) questioned the immediate credentials of both contenders, pointing out that Prates recently fell to Ian Garry—whom Makhachev defeated in August—while Morales (19-0) has not stepped into the Octagon since November 2025.

“Prates and Morales will fight to determine who is a true worthy contender,” Makhachev told Pound4Padel. “It’s good; it makes it more interesting. They offered me a fight against Prates, who recently lost to someone I beat.

And if I beat him, Morales would already be next in line, who is not fighting and waiting [for a title shot]. Just let them fight and we will figure out who is the real challenger.”

Prates (24-7) has finished all seven of his UFC victories, with his sole promotional loss coming via unanimous decision to Garry last year. Since that defeat, “The Nightmare” has rebounded with stoppage wins over Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards, and Jack Della Maddalena. Morales enters the matchup undefeated, having finished Sean Brady in his most recent appearance.
