Luis Hernandez, who stepped in on two days' notice at UFC Vegas 121 and finished Sedriques Dumas in less than a minute, has addressed the tension between himself and UFC veteran Chris Curtis. The bad blood dates back to a Tuff-N-Uff event last year, where Hernandez mocked Curtis and Sean Strickland after defeating their Xtreme Couture teammate Miles Hunsinger, drawing a strong reaction that required security to intervene.
Curtis recently stated that he contacted UFC matchmakers about facing Hernandez after the Miami-Dade County deputy sheriff earned a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series earlier this month. According to Curtis, matchmakers turned down the matchup due to the disparity in experience. Curtis added that he approached them again following Hernandez’s successful debut on Saturday, only to be denied for the same reason.
While Hernandez claims he has buried the hatchet with Strickland, he believes Curtis is chasing clout by calling him out. Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Hernandez expressed confidence that he could end Curtis' UFC run, though he prefers to wait until the stakes are higher.
“Me and Sean are good,” Hernandez told Helwani. “I’m going to get my fights; I’m growing my name. If his name comes down the list, I could be the final coffin to put him into retirement… I’ve been respectful.
If he has a problem with me, I guess we could settle it. If I’m the final nail, it’ll happen sooner or later. I want to build my name first, and then I will fight him.”
