Khamzat Chimaev Vows to Chase Sean Strickland to Any Weight Class for Rematch

Khamzat Chimaev says he is ready to move up to light heavyweight or heavyweight to secure a rematch against UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland.

Khamzat Chimaev is determined to run things back with Sean Strickland, regardless of what division the bout takes place in. Strickland handed Chimaev the first defeat of his mixed martial arts career in May at UFC 328, capturing the UFC middleweight title by split decision. While Chimaev campaigned for an immediate rematch following the loss, Nassourdine Imavov subsequently appeared to be first in line for a title shot.

Matchmaking plans have since hit a snag as Strickland entered a pay dispute with the UFC, stating that he would prefer to vacate the belt and move up to light heavyweight if the issue is not resolved. The promotion had reportedly been targeting Strickland's first championship defense for late this year or early 2027, but the champion's immediate future remains uncertain. If Strickland does change divisions, Chimaev intends to follow.

"If he goes up to 205, I’ll go after him and take his head," Chimaev told MMA Fighting. "If he goes higher weight, I’ll go to heavyweight. This guy is not going to run from me." Chimaev also highlighted the lucrative nature of a second fight, adding, "They’re gonna pay good for our fight. It’s a big check."

Regardless of how Strickland's standoff with the UFC plays out, Chimaev is eager to book his next appearance inside the Octagon. "Hopefully soon, very soon," Chimaev said regarding his return. "I’ve been training, asking about a fight.

I don’t know what’s going on with him and Imavov and those guys. If they don’t fight, I want to fight with some of them."
