Joshua Van Dominates Alexandre Pantoja to Retain Title at UFC 331

Joshua Van cemented his reign atop the flyweight division on Saturday night, defeating former champion Alexandre Pantoja via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 331 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Having initially claimed the belt last December following a freak injury, Van (18-2) left no doubts across five rounds of relentless pressure. The champion carved up Pantoja with sharp combinations, opened multiple cuts on the Brazilian's face, and threatened finishes with both a heavy right hook and submission attempts. Despite a spirited effort from Pantoja (30-7), Van took the victory on the judges' scorecards with tallies of 49-46, 49-47, and 50-45 to notch his second successful title defense.

In the co-main event, lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan made a major statement by knocking out rising Brazilian Mauricio Ruffy at 4:56 of the opening round. Tsarukyan survived an early scare when Ruffy landed a clean right cross, but the Armenian contender quickly regrouped. Late in the frame, Tsarukyan cracked Ruffy with a clubbing left elbow to the jaw and followed with a right elbow that knocked Ruffy out cold, improving Tsarukyan's record to 24-3 while Ruffy fell to 14-3.

The main card also featured notable finishes from veteran contenders. Former two-time Bellator champion Patricio Freire (38-9) dismantled Doo Ho Choi (17-5-1), stunning the South Korean with a right hand, dropping him with a left uppercut, and finishing the fight on the canvas with ground strikes from referee Mike Beltran's stoppage. Earlier in the night, massive -2400 betting favorite and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Gable Stevenson suffered a shocking defeat when Sean Sharaf knocked him out with a counter left hook just 12 seconds into the first round.
