Gable Steveson suffered the first defeat of his professional mixed martial arts career at UFC 331 in Los Angeles this past weekend, falling via knockout after being caught by a left hand from Sean Sharaf. Following the stoppage, Steveson exited the Octagon before announcer Bruce Buffer could read the official decision and did not remain inside the cage to congratulate Sharaf, instead heading backstage for medical evaluation.
In response to criticism surrounding the immediate departure, former champion Jon Jones took to social media to clarify that he directed Steveson to leave the cage right away to prioritize his health.
"I’ve seen some reports on line and I really wanted to clear the air. It was my decision to take Gable straight to the back after the fight," Jones wrote on Twitter. "Honestly it was the first time in this situation for me and my instant reaction was to get my friend to the back to make sure he was ok.
Gable’s work ethic and will to win is there and I stand by him and believe he will go on to be one of the best heavyweights in the UFC. He will be back I’m sure of it."
Steveson entered UFC 331 with a 4-0 record, having earned first-round finishes in all four of his previous bouts. The high-profile wrestling prospect previously transitioned toward MMA after working in Jones' training camp as Jones prepared for a matchup against Stipe Miocic.
