UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has suggested that his retirement from mixed martial arts is approaching, posting to social media that his next bout will be one of the final appearances of his career. At 35 years old, Makhachev is widely viewed as the sport's top pound-for-pound competitor and one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Makhachev's social media message comes after weeks of backlash following reports that he will not defend his welterweight championship until after Ramadan next year. Following a successful title defense against Ian Machado Garry, Makhachev had previously called to defend his belt against Carlos Prates in January.

With Makhachev sidelined until after Ramadan, the UFC has instead booked Prates against Michael Morales for an interim welterweight title. That interim championship bout is scheduled to serve as the co-main event of UFC 336 on Jan. 30 in Toronto. Makhachev stands as one of only four fighters in UFC history to win and defend titles in multiple weight classes.
