Former UFC champion Jon Jones is open to making a return to the Octagon after Tom Aspinall vacated the UFC heavyweight championship earlier this week. Aspinall relinquished the belt after suffering another training setback that will keep him sidelined for the foreseeable future. Speaking at the UFC 331 media day, heavyweight prospect Gable Steveson confirmed that he spoke directly with his training partner about a comeback.
“I called Jon today, and he’s honored to have the opportunity to maybe come back,” Steveson said, noting that the two train one-on-one together on a daily basis. Steveson added that he hopes Jones' eye heals properly and acknowledged that while Jones was a unique talent, it may also be time for new contenders to step up. Jones previously fought Stipe Miocic and retired last year, and later attempted to unretire after the UFC White House event was announced, though it remains unconfirmed if the promotion is interested in bringing him back.
With Ciryl Gane being promoted from interim to undisputed champion following Aspinall's departure, Steveson suggested Josh Hokit could receive an opportunity if Jones does not return, while praising Gane as the division's current top heavyweight. As for his own career, Steveson noted he is not yet ready to fight for the title, but believes dedicated training could put him in championship contention within the next year.
