UFC CEO Dana White voiced his frustration over welterweight champion Islam Makhachev's activity level, explaining that the champion's delayed return prompted the promotion to create an interim championship. Speaking to reporters on Saturday following UFC 333, White revealed that Makhachev was initially scheduled to defend his title in January before shifting his plans to return after Ramadan next year.

Due to the delay, Carlos Prates and Michael Morales will now meet for the interim welterweight title at UFC 336 on Jan. 30, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The winner of the matchup is expected to face Makhachev in a title unification bout, potentially targeted for next summer.

White criticized the lack of activity, making it clear that the division must continue moving forward. "On average, Islam fights like once a year, and he was slated for January and then said, 'I don't wan...'" White said. "You just can't hold up divisions like this."
