Alonzo Menifield picked up another impressive upset win at UFC 331 on Saturday, defeating previously undefeated light heavyweight prospect Iwo Baraniewski via split decision. However, the hard-fought victory came at a painful physical cost.
Heading into the third round of the bout, it was evident that Menifield’s hand was in bad shape. Following the decision, the veteran fighter revealed in his post-fight interview that his thumb had suffered a severe injury during the action. UFC CEO Dana White later posted a graphic photo of Menifield’s bloody thumb to his social media.
With the victory, Menifield has now won two consecutive bouts and four of his past five appearances. That run includes notable upset wins over Baraniewski and Zhang Mingyang.
