Alexander Volkanovski is confident he will be the first fighter to defeat Movsar Evloev when the two collide at UFC 333 on Oct. 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Heading into his featherweight championship defense, Volkanovski (28-4) described himself as a stylistic "nightmare" matchup for the undefeated Russian challenger (20-0). The Australian explained that Evloev often relies on wrestling whenever he encounters adversity, but stressed that fallback plan will be useless against him.
"He is very effective with what he does… Every time he’s had problems, he could rely on that wrestling and grappling to get him out of trouble," Volkanovski said in a pre-fight interview. "That’s not a get out of jail free card with me. When you’re panicking, when you’re freaking out, you don’t get to just grab hold of me and hang on to a leg or anything like that… I just think that I’m a bit of a nightmare [matchup]. I just think I’m the guy to take that zero from him."
Volkanovski has proven his elite defensive wrestling in high-stakes bouts, including a competitive first meeting against UFC men's pound-for-pound top fighter Islam Makhachev. Over the course of 32 professional bouts, the reigning champion has never been submitted.
